- How Not to Do It? Here is a recent email exchange with an editor-in-chief of a major food trade publication: "We have a controlled circulation and are not trying to drum up new subscribers." The point: Be very careful when you, or anyone in your organization, says anything like "we...are not trying to drum up new subscribers." It is the same as "our products will sell themselves," etc. In this instance, the trade magazine's PRIMARY CUSTOMERS are their subscribers. Absent subscribers = no advertisers.

- Buyer Beware! I had the distinct pleasure of guiding a food business to profit after being in the red for 12 years. It took a year and a half of on-site and periodic consulting, but it worked, they actually declared a profit! Unfortunately, the firm decided not to pay the remaining contract.The problem: They claim soverign tribal immunity. How's that for due process?
